Body mass index (BMI) is a measurement that helps you determine if you’re at a healthy weight. However, it is not a measurement of body fat. BMI is calculated by taking your weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in meters squared: weight / height^2.
Use the sliders below to get an idea of what your Body Mass Index is and what category it fits into:
20.0
Normal weight
Standard BMI Categories
Underweight is below 18.5
Normal weight is between 18.5 and 24.9
Overweight is between 25 and 29.9
Obese is above 30
Depending on your body time, the BMI value might indicate that you’re obese when you actually have low body fat and a large muscle mass. Always take standalone BMI values with a grain of salt, in the absence of other body measurements.
How to improve your Body Mass Index
BMI by itself is not a complete and accurate representation of your current health or fitness level. You should consider at least a few more measurements to get a better picture. For example, one additional measurement is waist circumference, which you can do with a simple measuring tape. Place the tape above your hip bones, below your rib cage at the smallest part of your torso. Another measurement is body fat, which is done by a trained professional using skin fold calipers or a specialized device.
